Young Mountain Mahogany in field Growth Characteristics: Mountain Mahogany is classified as a shrub, but it can grow up to 20 feet. It has gray-green leaves and small flowers in the early summer. Range: True Mountain Mahogany can be found from South Dakota and Montana to New Mexico and west to California and Oregon between 4,000 and 10,000 feet in elevation. It prefers drier canyons and ridges but can also be found in moister canyon bottoms (USDA Forest Service, 1988).
