Index of Presentations Delivered at the Plant Community Restoration Workshops
Great Basin Research Center, UT: Sept. 18 – 20, 2006 & Grand Junction, CO: Sept. 5 – 7, 2007
The information included in these pdf files have been assembled from two related workshops that address restoration of plant communities with specific emphasis toward the big sagebrush Artemisia tridentata and pinyon-juniper woodlands. Topics have been organized to discuss the status of deteriorated plant associations and characterize conditions that need to be addressed in both artificial treatments and management practices. Attention has been given to discuss the features of wildlife habitats that need to be created or improved to benefit upland game birds and big game animals. Considerable emphasis has been given to discuss restoration practices required to identify and characterize candidate sites for treatment, and implement procedures to control competition, prepare suitable seedbeds, and complete planting of a diverse array of species.
A primary objective of the overall program is to re-establish the diverse assembly of species that existed over a broad terrain. A number of presentations are provided that discuss the ecology, agronomic features, and development of native plants that are required to restore the sagebrush and pinyon-juniper communities. Most native species required to restore these plant associations are not currently available, but significant progress has and continues to be made in the selection and development of site adapted germ plasm for areas within the Intermountain Region and Colorado Plateau. The status of existing plant development programs and the features of plants emerging from these research activities are presented. Various field tours were organized and conducted to demonstrate the performance and attributes of individual species amid various rearing sites and field plantings.
We want thank all of the speakers for making these workshops such a success and for their willingness to share their excellent presentations. Email addresses for the speakers are also provided.
